A transdiagnostic neuroaffirming assessment is a psychological evaluation that moves beyond traditional, categorical diagnoses to focus on an individual's unique neurotype, strengths, and underlying processes across multiple conditions. Within this assessment experience, we'll focus on identifying common underlying factors that drive symptoms across different psychological conditions. This allows us to hone in on and assess common issues like emotion dysregulation, avoidance behaviors, cognitive inflexibility, and rumination without the limitation of needing to fit neatly into existing diagnostic labels.

Readiness Letters are written within an informed consent model, per WPATH SOC 8. This evaluation will be a one-time 45-60min meeting, and will receive a completed letter within 1 week of this appointment. Turnaround time as quickly as same day can be arranged in most instances.
Requirements for letters often include data about mental health stability or medication regimen, but can include specific phrasing or elements as requested by the consulting surgeon or insurance payer. Having any unique requirements ready will be helpful to expedite the letter writing process.
During this evaluation session, we will discuss history related to your gender identity and transition-related experiences (i.e. social, legal, medical transition). We will also discuss the gender affirming care that you are seeking, and discuss how this care will impact your life. Finally, we will discuss your current supports, and talk through any additional supports that could be helpful to your continued transition journey.

WHAT CAN BRIEF PSYCHOTHERAPY BE USED FOR?
Therapeutic Assessment: Collaborative Targeted Therapy that Utilizes Assessment to Foster Self-Understanding
Therapeutic Assessment is a collaborative approach in which psychological exploration is used to empower individuals to gain deeper self-awareness and discover new perspectives for navigating life's challenges.
Traditional psychological assessment, in contrast, often focuses on identifying or labeling conditions to inform treatment planning or measure intervention outcomes.
While Therapeutic Assessment can also be used to inform and measure treatment, its primary goal is to foster self-understanding that empowers meaningful, positive shifts in how individuals experience themselves and their world.
Identity Exploration: Brief Psychotherapy may be used as a safe space to explore and integrate identities of all kinds.
Gender & Sexual Identities
Romantic & Relational Identities
Racial & Ethnic Identities
and more
Post-Diagnostic Support: Post-diagnostic support may be helpful to those who would like to take time to better understand themselves through the lens of their neurotype, as well as discuss coping skills and environmental adaptations.
Identify your unmet needs & develop adaptive strategies
Better understand your history of masking and camouflage
and more
Using Insurance
I am currently accepting Highmark BCBS and out-of-area BCBS, as well as Aetna for the following services:
Individual Psychotherapy (Brief and Long-Term)
Letters for Gender Affirming Care
Therapeutic Assessment*
*Please note, standard assessments are self-pay only. If you are interested in using insurance for psychological assessment, Therapeutic Assessment may be a good fit for you in lieu of the standard process. I bill Therapeutic assessment as I do individual therapy, as it functions as a form of brief psychotherapy within my practice. This eases the work of managing insurance billing for me, and offers you the ability to obtain a diagnosis (if desired) as well as target some real world challenges as you learn more about yourself across multiple sessions.
Standard Assessment Process:
Prior to Evaluation Session: Client completes Preliminary Background Questionnaires & Self-Report Measures
What I do prior to the Evaluation Session: Scoring and Record Review
Evaluation Session: We meet (in 1 or 2 Sessions) and engage in a clinical interview
At the End of our Meeting: I will share my initial clinical impressions based on the available data & (if needed) discuss additional assessment that would aid with diagnostic clarity
Diagnostic Summary: if not paying for a full report, a diagnostic summary will be shared with you following the evaluation session.
Comprehensive Report: 2 weeks after the evaluation session, the completed report is shared, and feedback session is scheduled (if applicable)
Prior to the Feedback Session: You will send me any questions that you have about the report, as well as any areas of focus that you’d like to make sure we discuss.
Feedback Session: We’ll meet for 45min for an interactive feedback session, in which we will review the findings, discuss any questions you have, and briefly process your perspective on the assessment as a whole.
FAQ
Who Might be a Good Fit for Assessment with Me?
I am experienced with making diagnoses for people with less straightforward presentations, such as:
High-masking individuals
Individuals who exhibit non-stereotypical Autistic traits
Individuals who have been able to navigate life “well enough” through compensatory skills.
I am also able to assess potential differentials or co-occurring conditions such as:
Obsessive Compulsive Traits
Social Anxiety
Complex Trauma
Dissociative Processes
Substance Misuse or Dependence
Who Might Not be a Good Fit for Assessment with Me?
While I am comfortable making diagnoses for people with less straightforward presentations, I may not be the best person for certain differential diagnoses and experiences.
Psychosis (Hallucinations and/or Delusions): I have some degree of knowledge and experience with psychosis across diagnoses, but I do not feel confident diagnosing schizophrenia spectrum conditions at this time. I have done some differential diagnosis of these presentations with autism, but there is a lot more for me to learn, and I do not have the capacity for more comprehensive testing which would be needed to clarify an autism diagnosis in the presence of truly co-occurring schizophrenia/schizoaffective/schizotypal conditions.
Specific Learning Disabilities (e.g., Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia): 'Specific learning disabilities' refer to various neurodevelopmental differences that affects a person's ability to acquire, comprehend, or use academic skills in specific areas, such as reading, writing, or math. I find it important to gather information regarding learning differences that impact an individual's life, along with the impact of any formal treatment, and ways in which the individual has worked to compensate for these in life. However, at this time I do not have the appropriate assessment skills to formally diagnose these. What I am able to do at this time is identify experiences which may align with a specific learning disability, provide you with additional information in order to explore this possibility, and recommend additional testing as desired.
Good Faith Estimate
Under the No Surprises Act (2022), health care providers need to give patients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like psychotherapy sessions, medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Make sure your provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before receiving services. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-877-696-6775
